Why safety comes first
Most people you meet online are exactly who they say they are. But a small number are not, and the consequences can be serious — from money scams to harassment. A few habits make you a much harder target without making dating any less enjoyable.
Before you match
Set yourself up well before the first conversation:
- Prefer apps that verify profiles. A verification badge does not guarantee someone's intentions, but it does make fake accounts much harder.
- Keep personal details off your profile: your workplace, home area, phone number, email and social media handles.
- Use photos that are not on your public social media, so your profile cannot be reverse-image-searched to your accounts.
- Review your privacy settings and decide who can see your profile.
While you are chatting
Most scams reveal themselves in the chat, long before any meeting:
- Keep the conversation in the app until you trust the person. On Wrati your number is never shown to other members.
- Ask for a video call before meeting. Someone who repeatedly avoids one is a warning sign.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you have not met — whatever the reason given: a medical emergency, a customs fee, a stuck payment, a business opportunity.
- Be wary of investment tips, job offers, or pressure to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or another app early on.
- Do not share intimate photos or videos. They can be used for blackmail.
Spotting a fake or scam profile
Common signs include very polished photos that look like a model's portfolio, a profile with almost no detail, someone who claims to be working abroad on an oil rig, in the military or as a doctor with a charity, stories that change, grammar that does not match their stated background, and declarations of love within days.
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it is fine to slow down, ask more questions, or simply stop replying.
Meeting for the first time
When you do meet, set it up so you are in control:
- Meet in a busy public place — a café, a mall, a park with people around — in daylight if you can.
- Tell a friend who you are meeting, where and when, and agree to check in afterwards.
- Arrange your own travel there and back. Do not accept a lift on a first meeting.
- Stay in control of your drink and your belongings.
- Do not go to someone's home, or invite them to yours, on a first meeting.
- Leave whenever you want to. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
If something goes wrong
Block and report the person in the app. On Wrati, blocking and reporting are free for everyone and never require a paid plan. Reporting helps protect other members too.
If you have been threatened, blackmailed or defrauded, report it to the police. In India you can report cybercrime at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling the national cybercrime helpline, 1930. In an emergency, call 112.
Keep screenshots of messages and profiles — they help both the platform and the police.
